About Highland Stoneware

Formed in 1974, while still a student of ceramics at the Royal college of Art in London, David Grant gained the support of his head of department David Queensberry and tutor Grahame Clarke to establish a company to make tableware with the quality of studio pottery, but using industrial techniques. david always wanted to locate his pottery in the Scottish Highlands where he was born and raised and where the local economy had long suffered from a chronic shortage of investment and unemployment. the site for the pottery was eventually found at Lochinver a small fishing port on the shores of a sea loch with the rugged mountains of the North West Highlands rising impressively behind it.

At Highland Stoneware we continue as we began in 1974 by making all of our own clay, glazes and decorating colours, which we fire to a very high temperature in a carefully controlled kiln atmosphere.

This combines a richness and depth of quality with performance and durability, giving us a unique palette. Individual freehand painting has always been a main characteristic of Highland Stoneware, and our artists are encouraged to continue to innovate and develop designs, and to make each piece uniquely different.

Patterns are created using a range of decoration techniques, primarily brushwork, but also sponging,
wax resist and scraffito.

By applying layers of glazes we achieve the colours, quality and effects which make our pots unique.

Every piece is signed by the artist, which adds to the individuality and also attracts a growing number of collectors.
